Super Quick Morning Routine
Jan 27, 2020Having a morning routine has been essential to help me have a really, really good day and make sure I'm achieving the success that I want.
But the downside of morning routines is there's a gazillion options to choose from and most of them take hours.
I have two kids. I do not have two hours in the morning to spend meditating, journaling, and going in ice baths. I have maybe half an hour if I'm lucky, before my kids are demanding breakfast. So what I want to share with you today are four really simple things you can do every single day without fail to set yourself up for success.
The first thing is water. Now I know that sounds so basic and simple, but it's something that gets forgotten all the time. As soon as I wake up, I drink water.
I always have a bottle of water on my nightstand. So as soon as I wake up, I drink as much of it as I can. It also rehydrates me after eight hours of not drinking anything.
The second thing I do is go on my exercise bike. Let's be really clear, never do I wake up and think I want to go on my exercise bike, but I do it because I'm committed to doing it and exercise is so important. All I do is set my timer for four minutes. That's it, four minutes. I do 20 seconds going as fast as I can and I give myself 10 seconds rest. It works a treat, it gets the blood pumping, wakes me up and gets me set up for a really good day.
Plus if I don't get the opportunity because I've got a really busy schedule to do any other exercise, I know I've done something that day. If you don't have an exercise bike in your bedroom, like why would you? You can do squats or sit-ups or jumping jacks or if it's nice weather, go outside and run on the spot for four minutes. It doesn't have to be anything complicated. Whatever you want to do, just do it. It's the movement, it’s getting that blood pumping and doing something to wake up your body in the morning that counts.
The third thing, which is definitely the least favourite for most people when I share this is a cold shower. At the end of my shower I switch the tap to freezing cold and I go in there for as long as I can stand it. Usually it's no more than 30 seconds, but this really snaps me back to the moment.
Sometimes when you're in the shower, your brain can really be busy thinking about everything you have to do that day. When you go into the cold water, you're brought straight back to the moment and you are awake for sure. If the bike and the water didn't get you there, you are awake after that shower.
The fourth thing is a nutrient dense breakfast. For me that's lots of veggies, lots of iron rich vegetables, quinoa, sweet potatoes, all the things that maybe you wouldn’t normally have for breakfast, but that's what I like. Choose something that works well for you. So those are my four things. Regardless of what day it is or how busy I am that week. Those are the four things that I always do consistently. One water, two exercise bike, three cold shower, four a nutrient dense breakfast.
These take no time at all and you can incorporate them into your routine as well. Now of course these are four super simple things and on the days when I have plenty of time, maybe when I've not got the kids around or on a weekend, I will spend some time meditating, journaling, visualising, going for a long gym workout, doing an exercise class. All these amazing things I love to do in the morning. It's not to say that you can't do those, but these four elements I feel are essential and I never miss them.
On the occasions when I used to miss them, I would feel totally out of whack the entire day. So what I wanted to share with you is if you want to start the morning routine, and if like me, you've got kids or you've got other responsibilities and time in the morning is short, you can have a morning routine using these four simple steps. It really is that easy and you can add in other elements as and when you have the time.
So give it a go and let me know how you get on.
